I was very pleasantly surprised when 3D Realms announced in January 2020 that a remaster of the 1999 FPS Kingpin: Life of Crime was in the works. It’s not an especially well-known shooter, but I have fond memories of its extreme violence, grimy ambience, endless profanity, and overall sense of silliness—it’s a game that aspired to be as over-the-top as possible on all fronts. Alas, the release was delayed in November of that same year, after which it fell off the radar completely.

Now it’s back, with a new trailer and a release date close enough that I can believe in it. Kingpin Reloaded, as the updated version is called, is now set to arrive on Steam on December 5.

Every game studio has the same, overriding goal: To field enough players to destroy Sweden. Companies like Capcom and Activision have, of course, had more than enough players in their myriad series to occupy Stockholm for some time, but now a plucky upstart has joined their ranks. 

Arrowhead just announced that Helldivers 2 has sold over 12 million copies since its February release, meaning “There are more Helldivers than there are Swedes,” in the words of CEO Johan Pilestedt. Sweden has around 10.5 million people in it, if you’re wondering, and Arrowhead is a Swedish studio, just in case you’re baffled by the comparison.

A leaked internal presentation by Dell on its forthcoming laptop models continues to give up interesting nuggets, this time a slide notes that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processors are cheaper and less energy-hungry than all of Intel’s recent chips, including Meteor Lake. So much so, that in some cases, battery life in equivalent laptops is extended by as much as 98%. And all that’s done with chips that are half the price.

Tango Gameworks’ co-founder and legendary game director Shinji Mikami is to leave the studio within the coming months, Bethesda has confirmed. Mikami set up Tango after leaving Platinum Games, which he had also co-founded with several Capcom alumni. His career began at Capcom where he was quickly recognised as a singular talent, and he cut his directorial teeth on a licensed 16-bit game (Goof Troop, of all things) before going on to design and direct the game that would make his name: Resident Evil.

I’m not sure how much point there is studying the end of the world given that, should the end of the world come about, all bets will be off. But such thoughts of futility do not deter academics, and their latest wheeze is to have a look at what happens in an MMO game that is going to shut off: A virtual end of the world affair.

The game in question is the Korean MMO ArcheAge and players were studied during a beta test that was scheduled to last 11 weeks.
